Nxuba – The Amazwi South African Museum of Literature is proud to announce a significant investment in the Olive Schreiner House Museum, a literary landmark and iconic heritage site in Nxuba. This renovation project, funded by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, aims to enhance the cultural, heritage and tourism experience, contributing to the socio-economic development of the area.
Celebrating Olive Schreiner’s Legacy
Olive Schreiner (1855-1920) was a pioneering South African writer and social activist. Her influential works, such as “The Story of an African Farm,” have left an indelible mark on South African literature. As a champion of women’s rights and social justice, Schreiner’s legacy continues to inspire generations. In recognition of her exceptional contributions to literature and her commitment to human rights and democracy, Schreiner was posthumously awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in Gold by President Thabo Mbeki in 2003.
Olive Schreiner House Museum: A Cultural Treasure
The Olive Schreiner House Museum, located in Nxuba, is a testament to Schreiner’s life and work. This historic house museum showcases the author’s personal belongings, manuscripts, and memorabilia, offering a unique glimpse into her remarkable life.
Renovation and Upgrade Project
To ensure the long-term preservation and accessibility of this cultural treasure, the Olive Schreiner House Museum has commenced renovations, refurbishments, and upgrades, which began in October 2024 and are expected to be completed by June 2025. The project will include:
– Renovation and refurbishment of the Olive Schreiner House
– Upgrade of Ikhamanga Hall
– Enhanced visitor facilities
Temporary Closure
During the renovation period, the museum will be closed to the public. We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to welcoming visitors once again when we reopen our doors, refreshed and revitalized.
