Once upon a time, Athol Fugard at Amazwi South African Museum of Literature (then National English Literary Museum) in Beaufort Street, Makhanda.

Andrew Martin, a Librarian at Amazwi South African Museum of Literature with years of experience on developing bibliographies, penned a moving tribute to Athol Fugard who passed away on 08 March 2025 at the age of 92. The piece appeared on Grocott’s Mail on 14 March 2025.

Amazwi, as the national literary heritage institution, has some of Fugard’s valuable original manuscripts. Fugard also features prominently in the Amazwi’s permanent exhibition, ‘Voices of the Land‘. This exhibition is at the head office at 25A Worcester Street, Makhanda. He was also featured in the ‘20 Years of Freedom‘ temporary exhibition that was at Ikhamanga Hall at Schreiner House, an Amazwi satellite in Nxuba (formerly Cradock).
